News Roundup

Yes, it's more non-Grim Fandango news for you, but we think it's possibly stuff you'd care about. Also, we're thirsty for news posting. Firstly, of course: Tim Schafer's new game, Psychonauts is totally out in the US, so you should buy it. Congrats to the Double Fine team (made up of Tim and a lot of other people who made Grim possible) on completing their first title, one that promises to be a fun and unique game. I mean, I played it...

Second: Double Fine has put up a sexy company store with the ability to buy signed copies of Psychonauts, the soundtrack for the game, plus loads of extra knicknacks, many of them wearable (except for the strategy guide). I wish this had existed during the days when GF was first coming out.

Third: I do not run Tim Fandango. That's Moosferatu and he deserves all the credit.

Fourth: In other network news, Nightlight Productions has loads of new stuff up, and more on the way. Go listen!

Seventh: What the hell is up with this site, anyway? It will be seven years old this July. How long can a Grim Fandango site last, anyway? Tim's already got a newer-type game out and everything. Maybe we'll have the answers soon.

Psychonauts Demo!!

It's been a bit slow around here! Hopefully you're all aware that Psychonauts, Tim Schafer's first game since Grim Fandango, will be released in the US in about a week!! Anyway, this is just an update to bug you about downloading the demo for Psychonauts, which surfaced earlier today. For details and download locations, check out our own Thrik's Psychonauts site, Razputin.net, or our festive host, The International House of Mojo.

Blast from the Past

Another item from the Grim Fandango Network's older days has been retrieved from the dark, vast Archives o' the Undead™, and added to the menu. Originally featured on our old hosted site, Glottis' Garage, the much-loved Grim Fandango Comic is back.

Well, not quite. The artist hasn't returned from his presumably luxurious cartoonist lifestyle or anything, but the six issues he created before ceasing development are now available for enjoyment. If you saw them back when they were hot, then it's sure to be a nice little memento of the past. If not, then you're in for a treat!

So, be sure to check them out. You can expect more older content to be reintroduced as time goes on (though I'm sure you can understand, with other responsibilities such as Razputin's Domain, it won't be instantaneous), as well as the completion of certain existing sections which are well overdue now.

New concept art added

Submitted by a very helpful guy on our forums, a new piece of concept art has been added to the bottom of the gallery. It was featured on the cover of a magazine, although quite what scene in the game it's supposed to represent I'm not 100% sure of. Be sure to thank N3mo for scanning it in for us.

Somebody over on Deviant Art has made a really funky flash animation to go along with ye olde Rusty Anchor song. Check it out here, for it is surely a treat.

Isn't this a Grim Fandango site?

Wondering why it's been so quiet around here recently? Well, those of you that're anticipating Psychonauts (which should be all of you after reading the previous news post) may be excited to hear that Mojo has added yet another site to its mighty arsenal.

The site in question is essentially the Psychonauts equivalent of the Grim Fandango Network. You'll find everything that you could possibly want to know or have regarding Psychonauts being added to the site as time goes on, with a good majority of resources already there right now. So, be sure to check out Razputin's Domain right now!

Pre-Order P'nauts RIGHT PNOW

Psychonauts, for those of you out there who are unaware, is a new game made by Tim Schafer, the guy who brought the world Grim Fandango (as well as other great games like Full Throttle and Day of the Tentacle). This game also was helped along in development by a large chunk of the Grim Fandango development team, who left LucasArts around when Tim did in 2000 to form Double Fine Productions. Anyway, after years of development and speculation, Psychonauts is available for purchase! Well, for pre-order anyway. The game ships April 19.

But why should you buy Psychonauts? While it's not a straight-up graphic adventure game like Grim Fandango, it is developed by many of the same people who made Grim Fandango possible, and promises to be stylish, innovative, and fun, as well as being rich in character development and oozing with dialogue.

Please show your support to Tim Schafer and Double Fine and pre-order Psychonauts today!

Also, Thrik made this:

Day Off The Dead

Remember that? Members of our forums that were around a few years ago may remember a thread which was discussing the upcoming release of this short movie. Personally, I forgot all about it once the thread had died, and I suspect that most other people did too. It turns out that the movie was released, and you can get it from their website. Simply browse to swag, and then use the yellow link on the bottom.

In a nutshell, the short movie (which comes to a few minutes in length) is a few "skits" portraying the growing romance between two characters, with the whole thing styled after Day of the Dead skeletons -- the very same ones that our much-loved Grim Fandango characters are crafted after. Whilst the skits themselves really aren't that funny, the animation and visuals are beautiful and definitely work checking out if that type of thing interests you. Have fun!

New Grim Fandango Launcher

The Grim Fandango Launcher which is developed by bgbennyboy has received an update, bringing it up to version 1.2. The update adds a "resume last saved game" option to the launcher, which quite naturally allows you pick up from where you left off with ease. It also fixes a bug, described by the man himself:

"if developer mode was enabled it wasnt possible to start a new game because the game automatically loaded up with Manny in the same room as he was when it was last run. The registry key that records this is now automatically erased."

So, there you have it! To view more information on the launcher and to download the latest version, simply click here. If you'd like to see what else bgbennyboy has created under the highly valued Quick and Easy brand, you can visit the website here.

The Light of the Night Returns

After what must seems like years of downtime, the highly anticipated relaunch of Nightlight Productions, one of our two final remaining hosted sites, is upon us! Sporting a whole new design, plus a mighty selection of content (including a look at how one of the characters was created), it will certainly give you something to do this evening!

Not only this, but they also have the first part in a new radio series up for grabs on the site. So, go on! Make 8 of 12 the happiest man alive and enjoy the feast that he has laid out for you. If you feel inclined to give the Nightlight team some feedback on their works, head over to their forum -- I'm sure that they'd love every last piece.

Oh man, news!

Just in case you've been wondering where the updates were, they're still on their way. A few other issues involving college and other such things have cropped up and are eating away at my time a little. This will delay the updates by a week or so.

However, I do have something for you. Bret Mogilefsky, the lead programmer of Grim Fandango (as can be read about here), has very kindly written in with a small easter egg in the game which you probably missed.

If you type blam into the game whilst on any screen, Manny will perform an amusing little action for you. Most excellent.

Finally, a big thanks to the dozens who have emailed in with info and other such things. It is highly appreciated, and whilst I have no been able to respond to everyone yet your emails have been read. A huge thanks, and your submissions will be added to the site when it receives the next big update.

Missing content section

You'll notice that a new section has magically appeared on the menu, namely the missing content section. It's a small archive of the images and sound files included with the game that were never triggered in the game itself. Most interesting.

This is one of a few extra sections that will be added over the next week or so, originally intended to be up for the launch but weren't due to the timing problems. The highly sought characters and locations sections are also nearing completion, so expect them shortly.

Update-o-Rama

To keep you all nice and occupied until the characters and wallpapers sections receive their big debut, I'll share with you some of the links and tidbits of information which I've been emailed over the past few days.

Chris has written in with mention of this link, which describes the process of creating a most excellent looking Manny Calavera mask - perfect for your upcoming Halloween activities, should you celebrate it.

Alia has expanded upon the previously submitted fan music by also emailing in with the sheet music for it. You can check those out here (Sanspoof) and here (She Sailed Away). Just what you need if you feel like playing a bit 'o' Grim Fandango.

Richard has also written in with mention of this charming little homage to Grim Fandango. Any fan of the game should enjoy reading it, so have a blast.

Finally, the fan art section has been given a quick update. There's quite a bit more to be added, but this was at the top of my "pile". They should sedate you for at least a few hours.

PS: People that rip off websites are really totally not cool. You know who you are. We know who you are. Not impressed.

Slight problems

As you probably noticed, there have been some problems with the network overnight. MixnMojo and various other sites have had errors, as well as us.

They should all be resolved now, but unfortunately all the comments left on the news were somehow wiped. Apologies if you commented and it's lost, but it shouldn't happen again - I've set up backups so they can simply be restored in future.

A dash of fan art

Work is underway on the new fan art and wallpaper sections (we could use more content though, if you feel like producing any), which should be up within the week.

I've just made a small piece of fan art to give you something to look at it while you wait - it's nothing special, but go check it out in the fan art section. There's also a larger version of the balloons available in the wallpaper section.

If you don't get what my fan art's on about, it's based on "raz's" Double Fine Action Comics, a series that any self-respecting Tim Schafer fan should be following.

Also, a lot of people missed this, so I'll repeat it again. The characters and locations sections are still under construction, they are not supposed to be working at the moment. Expect them to be up properly, like the fan art and wallpaper sections, at the end of the week.

I'm determined to make these the most detailed characters and locations sections on the web, so it will take some time to do properly. That's all, angels.

Fan music occurs

Only a day since we reopened, and already the content is flooding in! Well, not quite - but we do have two delightful pieces of fan music for you, submitted by the highly generous Alia.

You'll notice that there's now a specially designated "Fan Content" area on the menu now, which will serve as the base for all fan work. Music has of course now been added, so get over there and feast on the two new submissions.
